And while Minecraft's purchase by Microsoft in 2014 caused some concern, so far the game has remained true to its roots. With a huge modding community, the ability to join or create your own servers, and the ability to create actual working machines within the game, Minecraft created what many believe to be a new genre of games, but perhaps one in which it is the only true member. I used to play Minecraft on beast of a 2008 MacBook Pro with 8 GB of RAM, and all extra graphics settings off, and it was still a bit laggy. Playing on servers with many other players (and block updates, etc.) was worse. A 2010 MacBook Air with those specs is a significantly less capable computer than my former beast of a Mac laptop. The Apple MacBook Air 'Core i5' 1.4 13-Inch (Early 2014/Haswell) features a 22-nm 'Haswell' 1.4 GHz Intel 'Core i5' processor (4260U) with two independent processor 'cores' on a single chip, a 3 MB shared level 3 cache, 4 GB of onboard 1600 MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM (which could be upgraded to 8 GB at the time of purchase, but cannot be upgraded later), 128 GB or 256 GB of PCIe-based flash storage, and an 'integrated' Intel HD Graphics 5000 graphics processor that shares system memory.
This all is packed in a razor thin 0.11-0.68 inch), 2.96 pound, aluminum case with an integrated 720p 'FaceTime HD' webcam, a backlit full-size keyboard and a 13.3' widescreen TFT LED backlit active-matrix 'glossy' display (1440x900 native resolution).
Connectivity includes 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, analog audio out, a 'Thunderbolt' port, two USB 3.0 ports, and an SDXC-capable SD card slot.
Compared to its predecessor, this model is practically identical -- with the same design and architecture -- but it has a faster processor, longer reported battery life (due to OS X improvements rather than hardware), and a few, but not many, different identifiers, as well.

Features

  • Apple stuck to the low resolution to stay with the 16:10 ratio rather than the 16:9. Here MacBook Air 6,2 (13-inch, Mid 2013) loses to Windows-based laptops of the same price segment which offer 1080p.
  • The downgrade of CPU clock speed has to do with the enhanced battery life up to 10 hours. Now, the clock speed figures don't mean much in a CPU performance and efficiency. Haswell family is 10% more efficient than the predecessor thanks to the new architecture.

Miscellanea

  • As we mention it above, the MacBook Air 6,2 (13-inch, Mid 2013) customized iteration with Intel Core i7 aboard has two storage options: 128 or 256GB solid-state drive. It's still a riddle, why Apple never offered it as a standard configuration as it happened to the CTO models of the previous years.
  • Of 4GB RAM the integrated Intel HD GPU takes 1.5GB, so only 2.5GB are left available for an end-user.
  • MacBook Air 6,2 (13-inch, 1.4GHz Intel Core i5, Early 2014) has no improvements at all save for the faster Haswell CPU with ultra-low TDP. The thermal design power (TDP) or thermal design point, is the maximum amount of heat a CPU or GPU generates. The maximum in its turn is determined by the cooling system power. In a nutshell, this feature means, that the processor is harder to overheat under normal performance and easier to cool by system fans.
  • Intel Core i5 (4260U) processor belongs to Haswell family and supports hyperthreading. Thus, the end-user got two physical cores and two virtual ones.
  • MacBook Air 6,2 (13-inch, 1.7GHz Intel Core i7, Early 2014) is also identical to the buid-to-order MacBook Air 6,2 (13-inch, 1.7GHz Intel Core i7, Mid 2013). Obviously, Apple isn't too generous when in comes to customizing their products. Both laptops, though with one year between them, run on the same Haswell processor with exactly the same clock speed and overclock speed.
  • PCIe is the Apple proprietary socket for SSD drives, so have it in mind when choosing the SSDs for upgrade. SSD drive is the only home upgradeable part of MacBook Air and an experienced user can easily boost up the storage volume. You can find 1 TB SSD drives in the market nowadays.
  • Solid-State or, as some reviewers put it, flash storage drives are manufactured by Toshiba, Samsung, SunDisk and Micron Technology, that's why MacBooks Air 6,2 (13-inch, Early 2014) yield various results in benchmarks.
